ARAWC Member Spotlight

Karissa Horch, Workers’ Compensation Claim Manager, Risk and Insurance for JCPenney

1. How were you introduced to ARAWC?
PartnerSource, specifically Richard Johnson.
2. Tell us about your company.
We are an American department store chain operating in approximately 669 stores across the U.S and PR. We are blessed to be celebrating 120 years in business this year! Our Departments inside JCPenney stores include Mens, Womens, Boys, Girls, Baby, Bedding, Home, Fine Jewelry, Shoes, Lingerie, The Salon by InStyle, and Sephora inside JCPenney. We have definitely gone through our share of major challenges over the past few years, but in my opinion we’ve come out better because of it!
3. What benefits have you seen so far from having the QCARE designation?
The two biggest advantages that we’ve already seen so far includes our reputation management and continued improvement of our defense of negligence liability claims. And honestly, it came at the best time as this was introduced to our company right before the recent national pandemic started in early 2020. I truly feel that this distinction gave our associates and their families added reassurance during a very challenging time that we are here to take at least one worry away that we are here to provide the best care available if they get injured while on the job for JCPenney.
4. Why do you think ARAWC and QCARE are important to your company?
As mentioned above, I think it’s an important resource to provide reassurance and clarity to not only the TDI public but more importantly our associates that our focus is providing the best care possible for our injured Texas employees. With QCARE we can better provide the important distinction between our quality TWIP programs versus other employers who simply “opt out” of Texas workers’ compensation.
5. Have you had the opportunity to meet and chat with other ARAWC/QCARE members, either within your industry sector or in general?
Not directly, but have enjoyed the updates provided by its members during PartnerSource’s annual Employer Convention.
6. What has been your impression of ARAWC/QCARE and the organization’s efforts so far?
Simply put, I think it’s a great concept and organization to help promote alternatives to workers’ compensation. I hope that all employers and industries consider an alternative approach, if possible!
