During the 2016 legislative session, supporters of a Tennessee Option worked on possible amendments to a bill that was originally filed in 2015. Improvements to the bill are being assessed in response to stakeholder suggestions to ensure a fair balance is achieved between employees and employers.
The goal of the Tennessee Option legislation is to complement workers’ compensation reforms enacted in 2013, building upon that progress to ensure a fair system for employees and employers. A Tennessee Option is a voluntary alternative which continues to protect employees, enables better outcomes and gives employers the flexibility to tailor quality injury benefit compensation programs to their businesses. The Option maintains standards required by state oversight.
Like Tennessee’s workers’ compensation reforms, a Tennessee Option shows that providing a safe workplace for employees and creating a more favorable business climate in Tennessee are not mutually exclusive.
We expect continued discussion among Tennessee Option supporters with introduction of a revised bill in 2017.
